HSUS: Blumenauer proposes farm animal experiment bill
Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., today introduced a bill to require protections for farm animals used for agricultural research at federal facilities, the Humane Society of the United States said Wednesday.
The bill follows a New York Times exposé of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, a federal livestock research facility in Indiana, HSUS said.
“Farm animals used in agricultural research are currently excluded from the protections of the federal Animal Welfare Act.” HSUS said in a news release.
“Meanwhile, taxpayers are footing the bill for cruel farm animal experiments to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars.”
“The Animal Welfare in Agricultural Research Endeavors (AWARE) Act will require agricultural research conducted at federal facilities to meet the basic care standards of the Animal Welfare Act.”
