Idaho’s Otter being vetted for Ag secretary
President-elect Donald Trump is vetting Idaho Republican Gov. Butch Otter for Agriculture secretary, two Idaho newspapers and a radio station are reporting.
Otter, 74, has agriculture experience. A former son-in-law of J.R. Simplot, founder of the agribusiness firm Simplot International, Otter spent 30 years with the potato giant, rising to the position of president.
He also served in the House of Representatives. But no one in Idaho seems to be getting too excited because Trump considered both Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, and nearby Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., for Interior secretary before reports that he had settled on Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont., for the Interior post. Otter’s third term as governor ends in 2018, and he is not running for re-election.
