Jan Swan Wood: BHSU hall of fame inductees, fundraiser for Jeff Jones, fun events, Woodard clinic
I think spring has finally sprung. It’s been a whole week without any snow! The surface has dried up enough that I can actually get to my car without overshoes on too. I’m grateful for the moisture and excited to see the green grass peeking carefully out of the ground.
The Black Hills State University Hall of Fame Induction ceremony was held on March 28, 2014, at Spearfish, S.D. The inductees were the 1981 BHSC Women’s rodeo team, Jim Willuweit and Duane Reichert. The 1981 women’s team include Patsy Perry Horton, Donna Keffeler, Rocky Troxell Kirkeby, Shari Simmons-Johnson, Dianne Mackaben, Cindy Painter Mankin, Deb Kopren McPherson, Lonna Peterson, LuAnn Pettie, Collette Phillips and Peg Lobmeyer Williams. They placed fourth in the nation and Patsy Perry won the all around and Shari Simmons the goat tying titles for the year. Jim Willuweit was a member of the 1968 men’s team and rode bareback and bulls. He currently ranches near Quinn, S.D. Duane Reichert was the bullfighter for the BHSC rodeos and throughout the college region, then went on to be a bullfighter and rodeo clown for the next 40 years. He also shared his time and talent with school children and visited 2,000 schools in 20 states over the years, giving his “Backstage With A Rodeo Clown” presentation. His rodeo acts have entertained audiences all over the country and also at the WNFR, Circuit finals and NHSR finals. Congrats to all the inductees. I tip my hat.
There will be a BBQ Sandwich supper and silent/live auction fundraiser to benefit the Jeff Jones family. Pierre, S.D., on April 26, 5-9 p.m. If you can’t attend, you can send a donation to: Jeff Jones Family Benefit, c/o First National Bank, Box 850, Ft. Pierre, SD 57532. The 2014 PRCA Hall of Fame has named it’s 2014 inductees. The August ceremony will honor rodeo great including Wayne Herman of Halliday, N.D. Herman, 50, won the world in barebacks in 1992, and was an 11 time qualifier for the WNFR. Congrats Wayne!
The South Dakota steer wrestlers made quite an impression at the Huntsville, Texas, PRCA rodeo. Todd Suhn, Hermosa, S.D., was second, Jake Rinehart, Highmore, S.D., was fourth and Kody Woodward, Dupree, S.D., tied for 5th. Chet Johnson, Sheridan, Wyo., tied for third in the saddle broncs too.
Well, that’s my circle for the week. I sure appreciate any news and notes that get sent my way! Have a blessed Easter and make sure you remember that it’s not about bunnies and eggs but about Jesus Christ’s death on the cross and His resurrection. He lives!
