Johnson’s J Ranch 41st Annual Bull Sale

Don Benson, Morristown, S.D.

Date: April 22, 2013

Average: 32 coming 2-year-old Angus bulls – $3,300

Johnson J Ranch, headquartered out of Trial City, S.D. hosted their 41st annual bull sale at Lemmon Livestock. Alan Johnson and family presented a working class set of coming two-year-old bulls in their everyday working clothes.

These bulls are all mainly May and June 2011 born bulls. By calving later in the spring on grass the health of the new born calves is greatly improved by not having to spend their first few months in the cold and stress of winter conditions. Since they calve later, the bulls are held over and sold as virgin coming two-year-olds in a late spring sale.

These bulls had not been pushed at the feed bunk and are in great condition to go out to the breeding pastures and go to work. After weaning, the bulls are fed a high roughage ration, with just enough grain for some added growth. The next summer they are turned out on grass, when the bulls come off grass in November, they go back on a high roughage ration in the dry lot. The end result is a group of bulls that are hard and ready to go to work in the breeding pasture. They will cover more cows than a yearling and with the way they have been developed, will remain sound on their feet and legs.
