BROOKINGS, SD – The Brown County 4-H horse judging team took first place in the South Dakota 4-H State Horse Judging Contest held on July 21.

The senior division team included Cheyenne Leonhardt, Taylor Leonhardt, Baily Ringgenberg and Kimberly Shook. Lawrence County’s team took second place and included Stephanie Johnson, Samantha Sleep and Fehrin Ward. The Spink County team was third, while Beadle and Davison County teams finished third and fourth, respectively.

County 4-H horse-judging teams and individuals from across the state competed for top honors. The top four individuals in the senior division earned trips to represent South Dakota at the National 4-H Horse Judging Contest in Denver. That event is held in conjunction with the 2011 National Western 4-H Roundup.



Sarah Bebo of Spink County earned first overall in the senior division for individual horse judges. Cheyenne Leonhardt, Brown County, was second; Fehrin Ward, Lawrence County was third; Kayla Gerlach, Davison County, was fourth; and Kelsey Fanning of Hutchinson County took fifth place.

In the junior division of the contest, Beadle County’s team of Kallie Carey, Braeden Edleman, Sierra Goergen and Jacey Hupp took first place. Lawrence County was second, and their team included Sentel Johnson, Sydney Sleep and KeAnna Ward. Spink County’s team was third, Brown County earned fourth place, and the 4-H team from Hutchinson County placed fifth.



Jacey Hupp of Beadle County was the first-place individual finisher in the junior division. Brittany Hinkle, Hyde County, took second; Roni Jankord and Ashlyn Buelow, both of Hamlin County, finished third and fourth; and Cooper Gordon, Spink County, finished fifth.

Spink County’s team of Tucker Bohl, Tyler Schone, and Joseph Woodring took first place in the beginner division, and Haakon County placed second with their team that included Jamilyn Addison, Savannah Solon and Gage Weller. The Hyde County team took third, while Beadle County’s beginner 4-H horse judges took fifth.

Savannah Solon of Haakon County took first in the individual scoring at the beginner division. Sierra Ward, Lawrence County, was the second-place judge, Lexy Leischner, Hutchinson County finished third, while Joseph Woodring and Tucker Bohl, both of Spink County, finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
