Lawrence County 4-H hippology team wins state title, will go on to national contest

BROOKINGS, SD – The Lawrence County 4-H senior hippology team took first place in the South Dakota 4-H State Hippology Contest held on July 21.

Lawrence County came away with the title of South Dakota State 4-H champions in hippology, the study of horses. Individuals on the winning team included Stephanie Johnson, Samantha Sleep and Fehrin Ward.

Brown County earned a second place finish with a team made up of Bailey Ringgenberg, Madison Cutler, Payton Healy and Kendall Hanson. The team from Spink County placed third, Hughes County finished fourth, and the Roberts County team was fifth.

County 4-H hippology teams and individuals from across South Dakota competed for top honors. The winning county team in the senior division earned a trip to represent South Dakota at the National 4-H Horse Classic. It will be held in conjunction with the 2011 National Western 4-H Roundup in Denver.

In the individual scoring, Samantha Sleep of Lawrence County won the 4-H senior overall hippology title. Fehrin Ward, Lawrence County, was second; Ashley Currence, Roberts County, was third; Sheila Price, Spink County, placed fourth; and Stephanie Johnson, Lawrence County, took fifth.

In the junior division of the contest, Lawrence County finished first with a team of Ryder Heitz, Sentel Johnson, Sydney Sleep and Keanna Ward. The Brown County 4-H team was second, with team members McCamey Kimbler, Tessa Kimbler, Colt Hokema and JoEllen Gonsoir. The Grant County team took third, Roberts County was fourth, and Spink County finished fifth.

Sydney Sleep, Lawrence County, was the first-place scorer in the individual juniors, and Ryder Heitz of Butte County took second. Keanna Ward, Lawrence County, was third, Sentel Johnson, Lawrence County, was fourth and JoEllen Gonsoir, Brown County, placed fifth.
