Leo J. Giacometto

Leo J. Giacometto, 101, of Belle Fourche, SD, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011 in Belle Fourche.

He was born Dec. 5, 1909 in Trojan, SD, to Ernest and Anna Giacometto. When Giacometto was five, his family moved to Bell Creek, MT to homestead.

While living in Montana’s Powder River County, he met and married the love of his life, Sara Kathryn Brogan, on April 19, 1936 and they were married for 72 years. Leo and Kathryn were always proud to say their first home was a sheep wagon. After ranching in Montana, the family, which now included two children, Leo E. and Marianne, moved to the Sulphur area in Meade County and continued to ranch in the area until they moved to Belle Fourche in 1946.

Giacometto was a local entrepreneur and also sold life insurance for Rushmore Mutual for years. He said he’d sell policies during the day and his wife and bookkeeper, Kathryn, would fill out forms at night. Leo continued to be a great story-teller and was still living in the same house and driving his truck to have coffee every morning when he left us to be with Kathryn.

He is survived by his son, Leo E. Giacometto of Stevensville, MT; daughter-in-law, Sondra Giacometto of Belle Fourche; daughter, Marianne Kopkowski of Belle Fourche, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, and numerous nieces and nephews.
