Lois L. Harrington

Lois L. Harrington, 94, of Piedmont, SD, died April 12, 2011 in New Underwood, SD.

Lois was born at Clough, SD, on Oct. 27, 1916 to Roy and Mary (Bremmer) Day.

She attended Sunny Slope School near Union Center and graduated in 1934 from Sturgis High School. After graduation she worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Sturgis.

Lois and Gene Harrington were married June 18, 1940, and made their home and ranched east of Piedmont in Elk Creek Valley for the rest of their lives. She helped with every aspect of the ranch, plus raised five kids and fed many hired men, raised bum lambs and calves and loved to work in her yard and garden.

Lois is survived by her five children: Mary Ann Hlavka of Sundance, WY, and her children Debbie Morris, Pete and Virginia Hlavka of Sundance, and Patty and Kevin Williams of Whitewood; Jon Harrington of Piedmont and his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Wayne Fortune of Interior; Connie and Ed Humble of Newell and their children, Tammy and Jason Bender of Britton, Clint Humble of Newell and Casey Humble of Maurine; LeRoy and Juanita Harrington of Piedmont and their children, Toni and Shawn Hill of Tea, Joe Harrington of Seattle, Levi Harrington of Sioux Falls, Frank, Dalton and MacKenzie Harrington of Piedmont; Dan Harrington of Terry, MT, and his children, Jay Harrington of Phoenix, AZ, and Jennifer and Chris Bolin of Austin, TX.

She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren; brother Harold of Scappoose, OR; her sister, Harriet Harrington, Belle Fourche; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, Oscar and Maxine Garr of Oregon.

Lois was preceded in death by Gene in 1990; daughters-in-law Sharon and Lori; son-in-law Joe Hlavka; her parents; sisters Lorene Brown, Iva Hartnagle and Mary Jane Olson; and brothers Art and Raymond.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Service at Serenity Springs Chapel of Tranquility in Rapid City, SD, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.

A memorial has been established by the family.
