Master Range Cattle Manager short course starts Nov. 4
The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service will host a Master Range Cattle Management short course that is set to start Nov. 4.
A total of four sessions will be held at the Meade County Extension office in Sturgis. The program also will feature on-ranch visits in summer 2010. It costs $50 per ranch, which may include two individuals. Additional ranch family members may attend for the cost of meals.
“An important element in ranch planning is families working together, and we encourage families to attend this strong training program as a group,” said Extension Livestock Educator Penny Nester, who is organizing the training. “This course lets ranchers make in-depth evaluations of their management approaches, and it’s designed so that each operator can tailor the course to fit his or her needs.”
The registration deadline is Oct. 28, and participants can call the Meade County Extension office at (605) 347-2436 to register, or mail payment and contact information to the office at 1029 Fifth St., Sturgis, SD 57785.
After the initial Nov. 4 meeting, sessions will be held Dec. 9, Jan. 6, 2010, and Feb. 10, 2010.
“Our objective with the short course is to provide participants the tools they might need to make better-informed decisions about their ranching operations,” said Extension Marketing/Farm Business Management Educator Stacy Hadrick, who also is organizing the training. “We will offer science-based information from Extension specialists and educators, tailored to each participant’s individual needs.”
The South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service and the USDA North Central Risk Management Education Center are sponsoring the short course.
