Mc Cumber Angus Ranch 2012 Bull Sale

Scott Dirk
There was a huge crowd of buyers at the Mc Cumber Angus Ranch for their annual bull sale.

The Tastad family held their annual bull sale at the ranch just outside of Rolette, ND on March 28. This sale is always a treat for me to attend. Chuck and Gail, along with Matt and Cynthia Tastad, always present a great set of cattle and are generous hosts.

The Mc Cumber Angus herd is very well known for producing quality seedstock bulls and fantastic replacement females; this year was no exception. The bulls were thick and stout with excellent growth and calving ease. The open heifers were the top end of the replacements; it was not an easy decision for Chuck and Matt to let these quality heifers leave the place.

The sale facility at the ranch was again filled with a standing-room-only crowd of buyers that came to purchase stock from this operation. There were several top-selling herd bulls in the sale, but bulls sold in price ranges to fit all bull buyers’ budgets.

Topping the sale was Lot 1, McCumber 8R101 Rito 1108, a February 2011 son of Sinclair Entrepreneur 8R101. This bull had EPDs of BW 3.3, WW 56, YW 98 and Milk 21, with an actual weaning weight of 803 pounds to ratio at 112. He also had a yearling ratio of 112 with a 365-day weight of 1,387 pounds. Pine Coulee Angus, Absorkee, MT, won the bidding battle at $35,000 (half interest/full possession).

Circle V Angus, Grace City, ND, bid $18,000 to purchase Lot 21, McCumber 8R101 Rito 1122, another son of Sinclair Entrepreneur 8R101 born February 2011. This bull had EPDs of BW 2.3, WW 47, YW 72 and Milk 18, with a weaning ratio of 106 and ribeye ratio of 105.

Selling at $17,000 was Lot 2, McCumber 8R101 Rito 161, also a son of Sinclair Entrepreneur 8R101 that was born January 2011. This bull posted EPDs of BW 3.5, WW 45, YW 81 and Milk 21, with great carcass ratios of 110 for intramuscular fat (IMF) and 102 for ribeye. Chapman Cattle Co., Stettler, Alberta, Canada, was the buyer.

Repeat Mc Cumber Angus bull buyer, Joe Bohl, Rugby, ND, purchased Lot 7, McCumber 8R101 Rito 1203, a March 2011 son of Sinclair Entrepreneur 8R101 with EPDs of BW 1.7, WW 46, YW 71 and Milk 20 for $17,000. This bull also surfaced at the top of the herd for performance and carcass with weaning ratio of 111, IMF ratio at 112 and ribeye ratio at 114.

The next top-selling bull was Lot 10, another McCumber 8R101 Rito 106, son of Sinclair Entrepreneur 8R101. This bull was born January 2011 and had EPDs of BW -0.1, WW 50, YW 83 and Milk 19. The bull had a weaning weight of 785 pounds with a 365-day weight of 1,310 and sold to Jay Olson, Grenora, ND, for $14,000.

The top-selling heifer was Lot 122A, Miss Wix 1010 of McCumber, a February 2011 daughter of OCC Missing Link 830M with EPDs of BW -0.2, WW 38, YW 67 and Milk 24. This broody, feminine heifer is a maternal granddaughter to the great Miss Wix 365 of McCumber donor cow, one of the foundation females of the Mc Cumber Angus cow herd. ZWT Ranch, Summersville, TN, was the buyer at $11,000.

Selling at $8,500 was Lot 127, Miss Wix 1114 of McCumber, a February 2011 daughter of Sinclair Extra 4X13 with EPDs of BW 2.9, WW 46, YW 86 and Milk 24. NLC Ranch, Wessington, SD, was the buyer.

Watch for the Mc Cumber Angus Ranch and Spickler Angus Ranch, Angus Partners sale in January 2013 to purchase commercial heifers sired by, or bred to, Mc Cumber and Spickler Angus bulls.
