Medicine Rocks Angus Ranch Production Sale

Doug Hogan

Medicine Rocks Ranch held their annual production sale on April 11, 2011 at Bowman Livestock Auction in Bowman, ND. Medicine Rocks Ranch is owned and operated by Frank and Charlene Mehling and family. With a spring storm in that area and blizzard conditions nearby, they went ahead with the sale and never looked back. There was a large crowd on hand, despite conditions, which made for a good sale. Frank and Charlene take great pride in raising cows that work in some of the worst winter storms they can remember. Their goal is to produce cattle that will survive in the harsh environment and they select for middle-of-the-road individuals that flesh easily, breed back, have sound feet, legs and udders, and have good dispositions. They have a strict culling program with the bulls and a cowherd that revolves around their overall goal.

The top-selling bull was Lot 8, Med Rock Upper Magnum 029, a 3/16/2010 son of Sitz Upward 307R, sold to Paddin Ranch, Camp Crook, SD, for $5,750. He boosted a BW EPD of 2.0 with a 205-day weight of 785 lbs. for a 114 ratio.

Lot 63, a 3/22/2010 son of SAF Connection, sold to Dale King from Hammond, MT, for $5,750. He carried EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 45, Milk 18 and YW+80.

Lot 1, Med Rock Leading Man 042, a 3/18/2010 Sitz Upward 307R son, sold to Six Creeks Farm from Ekalaka, MT, for $5,500.

Lot 29, Med Rock American Cedar 030, a 3/12/2010 Cole Creek Black Cedar 030 son, sold to Jim McCabe, Ekalaka, MT, for $5,500.
