Mellette Co. Heifer Show set for Aug. 24 in White River
As haying season draws to a close this summer, livestock producers are encouraged to start watching for calves they might bring to the annual Mellette Co. Pen of 3 Heifer Show this year, including steer calves.
The show will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24 at the White River, SD rodeo grounds.
As in the past, producers may enter three heifer calves in either English (Crossbred) or Purebred divisions. Weights of the calves will be taken, and pens entered in the Crossbred division will be evenly divided in additional Heavyweight and Lightweight classes.
Plaques will then be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each of the three classes: Purebred, English Heavyweight and English Lightweight.
A highlight of the show is presenting the owner of the Overall Top Heifer calf with a beautiful Montana Silver belt buckle. This calf has become prestigiously known as the “buckle heifer.” Past winners of this award are always encouraged to bring back their prize winning “buckle heifer” in future years, along with her current calf if possible – for display purposes.
The show directors have decided to offer another opportunity for producers to showcase their calves this year.
For the first time, this show will also include a Steer Calf division. Steer calves will all be judged individually, rather than in pens of three as with the heifer calves. Producers may enter one or more steer calves.
There will be no class distinction among the steer calves. One Grand Champion and one Reserve Champion steer calf will each be awarded a commemorative trophy.
Seedstock producers in the area are also invited to bring any bull calves to the show, for display purposes only. This show provides an excellent opportunity for these young cattle to be showcased for prospective buyers.
A 50-50 drawing will be held during the show, where attendees will be allowed to purchase a guess at the combined weight of all steer calves entered.
A number of local and area businesses are helping to sponsor this year’s show, which is conducted under the direction of the Mellette County Livestock Improvement Association (MCLIA). Historically, these businesses have donated a large number of door prizes offered to attendees at the show. And as always, a free beef lunch will be provided, courtesy of the MCLIA and show sponsors.
Weigh-in of calves will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Official judging will begin at 11 a.m.
Pre-registration is not mandatory for entries, but is helpful to know how many pens to set up prior to the show.
Since it’s inception 17 years ago, the Mellette Co. Pen of 3 Heifer Show has shown tremendous growth, and has become known as one of the leading livestock shows in the region. With the addition of a Steer Calf division, the board of directors is anticipating a record turn-out at this year’s show.
As always, there is no charge to enter livestock in this show, thanks to sponsorship from the MCLIA and many local and regional businesses (which will be recognized on the official show program). The show is open to the public.
If you have further questions, or would like to pre-register, please contact one of the following MCLIA board members: Dan Krogman at 605-259-3688; Bob Hutchinson at 605-259-3468 or Joyce Glynn at 605-344-2533.
