A team of students from the University of Minnesota took top honors in the 2016 National Collegiate Beef Quiz Bowl, held in conjunction with the 2016 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show in San Diego, Calif., Jan 27. The competition was sponsored by Farm Credit Services, and was presented by the American Society of Animal Science and the National Cattlemen’s Foundation.

The annual beef quiz bowl is designed to help develop future leaders through industry-oriented education and competition while also offering students the opportunity to be part of the annual cattle convention. Participating teams earn the right to compete in the national competition by winning their ASAS section’s competition of the Academic Quadrathlon.

Students on the winning team at Minnesota were Rebecca Church, Sarah Marketon, Troy King and Trevor Otte. The second highest-scoring team was Penn State University, with members Amber Gabel, Michelle Hartzell, Jaylene Lesher and Elizabeth Palmer.

The other team in the competition was Oregon State University. Its members were Matt Cugley, Ryan Viera, Molly Coelho and Max Schmidt.

Moderator for the San Diego competition was Jason Ahola of Colorado State University.
