Mogck & Sons Angus of Olivet Annual Production Sale

Dan Piroutek
Stan and Dee Leaders, Leaders Angus, from Minden, IA, bought Lot 67 for $11,500.

A big crowd gathered on a cool, typical South Dakota spring day for the Mogck annual production sale. The bulls were displayed on fresh green grass before the sale, bringing out their best qualities. This allowed bidders the chance to evaluate these big, outstanding bulls, and with the Mogck hospitality, the bidders were more than ready to buy at sale time.

Mogcks feed out quite a few cattle and have found that they can bid up and pay a premium for their customers’ calves because they feed well and bring bonuses at marketing. They truly believe their own best bulls produce the best cattle, and they actively seek those calves to take to the feedlot. Mogcks have built some very good relationships with these customers over a long period of time. There were several commercial cattlemen vying for the top bulls.

Buyer interest was very strong, as several Angus breeders were on hand to compete for the top end of these bulls.

The top-selling bull of the day was Lot 4, a very stout, thick-made son of the home-raised herd bull, Mogck Sure Shot. He was a calving ease bull with a 78-lb. birth weight, and EPDs of BW -1.2, WW 62, Milk 33, YW 103, MARB 0.42, and REA 0.32. He proved his growth traits when he weaned at 901 lbs. to ratio 124, and posted a yearling weight of 1,384 lbs. to ratio 107. His marbling score was 5.50 to ratio 112 and he had a ribeye area of 14.2 square inches. After very spirited bidding, he sold to Fuoss Angus from Draper, SD, for $16,500.

J.K. Angus of Montrose, SD, teamed up with Dickoff Angus from Onaka, SD, to purchase Lot 22 at $15,000. This son of Sitz Upward 307R was out of a daughter of Mytty In Focus, with pathfinder status and a weaning weight ratio of 106 on five calves in her pedigree. This bull had a weaning weight of 807 lbs. to ratio 111 and a yearling weight of 1,521 lbs. to ratio 117. With an REA of 14.3 square inches, and a marbling ratio of 103, he had good EPDs of BW 1.5, WW 65, YW 132, and Milk 37.

The Lot 67 bull sold for $11,500 to Leaders Angus from Minden, IA. With an 82-lb. birth weight, he was a son of MCC Daybreak out of a daughter of SAF Connection.
