NDSU Dickinson Center to host composting event Aug. 16
The North Dakota State University (NDSU) Dickinson Research Extension Center, with cooperation from the Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange, will host a daylong compost demonstration event Aug. 16.
“The compost demonstration day will be a great opportunity for livestock producers to learn about creating compost from manure and managing compost,” said Chris Augustin, NDSU Extension Service area nutrient management specialist.
The event starts at 9:30 a.m. (Mountain time) at the center.
During the morning, Augustin will discuss the basics of managing manure composts. Also, Larry Schnell of Stockmen’s Livestock Exchange will provide a compost turner demonstration at the sale yard.
Following lunch (on your own), the workshop will reconvene at the Dickinson Research Extension Center. Afternoon topics and presenters include:
• Composting dead animals – Teresa Dvorak, NDSU Extension livestock nutrient management specialist;
• Fertility, benefits and economics of composting – Ron Wiederholt, NDSU Extension nutrient management specialist; and
• Regulations related to composting and site selections – Karl Rockeman, North Dakota Department of Health.
The event is free of charge but registration is required. To register, contact Augustin at 701-652-2951 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
