NDSU meat judging team places second at Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Contest

North Dakota State University’s meat judging team placed second in the Southeastern Intercollegiate Meat Contest.

The team received second place in the specifications category, thirds in beef judging and pork judging, fourths in the reasons and total placings categories, and second overall.

The competition was held April 15-16 at The Ohio State University and University of Kentucky. The NDSU team competed against 11 other university teams.

Team members are Christine Wanner of Wishek, ND; Micayla Clarin of Princeton, MN; and Mason Lautenschlager and Levi Hall of Berthold, ND.

They also brought home several individual awards:

• Wanner placed second in pork and reasons, fifth in beef and ninth overall.

• Clarin received second place in beef and fifth in placings.

• Lautenschlager placed third in specifications and 10th overall.

• Hall received fifth place in specifications.

The team’s coaches are Robert Maddock, an associate professor in NDSU’s Animal Sciences Department, and Nathan Hayes, an Animal Sciences graduate student. Kelsey Phelps serves as an undergraduate assistant coach.

Associate professor Paul Berg taught this group of students in the introductory meat judging class in fall 2010 with assistance from Andy Wirt, an undergraduate assistant coach.

“The team did a great job with some stiff competition from a number of other institutions,” says Greg Lardy, Animal Sciences Department head.

The team will compete in several other contests this fall.
