Nebraska: Brand surcharge bill passed by legislature

The Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association has been keeping a close eye on LB 181, a bill that will allow a surcharge to be implemented by the Nebraska Brand Committee in order to make up for traveling expenses incurred by inspectors. LB 181 was passed on final reading May 5, and now waits Governor Heineman’s signature.

Senator Tom Hansen introduced LB 181 and made it his priority bill. This bill was voted on by Nebraska Cattlemen membership to also be a priority bill. Nebraska Cattlemen members are concerned about the Nebraska Brand Committee’s ability to financially meet travel expenses with rising fuel prices.

“I was glad to introduce the bill because all of us in the western part of the state rely on the Nebraska Brand Committee to fulfill their duties,” said Hansen. “And LB 181 will help keep them fiscally viable.”
