NILE Ranch Rodeo celebrates the origin of rodeo
In the late 1800s, rodeo emerged as nothing more than a few ranches coming together and competing to see which outfit had the best cowboys – who was the most efficient at performing their daily ranch tasks. Bragging rights were earned by the ranch with the best ropers and riders. Modern-day rodeo may look a little different than its primitive roots with the prize money, professional athletes, and bright lights of Las Vegas in December. But, the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) offers the best of both rodeo worlds, starting by putting the “ranch” back in rodeo on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rimrock Auto Arena at Metra Park.
The NILE Championship Ranch Rodeo Finals will feature twelve teams of ranch cowboys from Montana and Wyoming demonstrating the truest form of daily working ranch activities. Events will include bronc riding, team penning, team branding, team doctoring, and wild cow milking. Teams must compete at NILE sanctioned rodeos throughout the year for a chance to qualify to compete at the NILE Championship Ranch Rodeo Finals in October.
A payout of over $8,500 will be awarded in money and prizes to the top three teams, with the winning team taking home the coveted NILE “Boot Trophy.” The night’s Top Hand will receive a custom trophy saddle and a pair of silver spurs will be awarded to the rider of the Top Horse. The winning ranch rodeo team will also earn a spot at the Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA) World Championship Ranch Rodeo Finals in Amarillo, Texas, in November. There, they will have the opportunity to compete against the top ranch rodeo teams in the nation for thousands of dollars in prize money.
