North Dakota: Ag Commissioner Doug Goehring urges producers to report losses

BISMARCK – North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring is urging producers to carefully document and then report their losses due to recent storms and spring flooding.

“We are asking producers to provide this information to the North Dakota State University Extension Service or the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association,” Goehring said. “The information can then be used by state officials to make a case for a secretarial or presidential disaster declaration, which will make more assistance available.”

Goehring said producers should contact their county extension office or the NDSA and provide an assessment of their current situation, including livestock losses, damage to buildings, corrals and fences. They should also describe what steps were taken to operate wells and provide shelter for newborn calves during recent power outages. All information is kept confidential.

“Livestock producers can use documentation they submit to the U.S. Farm Service Agency (FSA) for the Livestock Indemnity Program,” Goehring said. “It’s very important that all producers also provide estimates of property damage and other losses.”

Goehring said producers should report the information as soon as possible. A listing of county extension offices is available at http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/extension/county-extension-offices. The NDSA office is 701-223-2522.

“It’s an extremely stressful time for farmers and ranchers who are dealing with the loss of livestock and the additional challenge of treating calves in wet conditions,” Gov. Jack Dalrymple said. “I encourage ranchers to utilize the services available through the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the FSA.”

Goehring said producers needing help in compiling loss documentation or one-on-one assistance in credit and financial matters should contact the North Dakota Agricultural Mediation Service at 800-642-4752.
