Northern Beef Packers gets county support

The troubled start-up of Northern Beef Packers, Aberdeen, SD, took a positive turn Tuesday, Aug. 30, as county officials approved a plan to give the company options that will assure another source of financing.

Brown County commissioners approved a resolution that would allow for the sale of nearly $9 million in tax increment financing bonds, or for the county and the company to enter into a developer’s agreement, the Aberdeen News reported. Either option would guarantee Northern Beef revenue, the paper reported.

Northern Beef’s attempts to get a packing plant up and running in Aberdeen have been stop and go for years amid a series of financial setbacks. Owners plan to open the facility, initially to employ 560 workers, this fall.
