Karl Hueftle: 1924-2015

Karl E. Hueftle of Cozad passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2015 at Cozad Community Hospital at the age of 91. Karl was born May 17, 1924 in Eustis, Nebraska to Gustav and Dora (Timm) Hueftle.

He was baptized Aug. 24, 1924 and confirmed at the Eustis Methodist Church. He graduated from Eustis High School with the class of 1941.

In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and completed his basic training at Fort Walters, Texas. He was then sent to Hawaii. While he waited to be shipped to Japan on Aug. 7, 1945, the atomic bomb was dropped Aug. 6, so that ship never sailed. He served in the 3925th Signal Corps Unit in the Photography Unit at Fort Shafter in Honolulu, Hawaii.

After the service, he learned to fly. He flew to Greeley, Colorado July 31, 1948 to visit his sister Lola for the weekend. This is where he met his future bride, Janice Juelfs. They were married July 31, 1949.

Karl farmed and raised cattle his entire life in Dawson and Frontier Counties. They made their home south of Cozad. Karl and Janice were blessed with six children, Karla, Lee, Donnis, Neil, Nolan and Gil.

Karl loved riding horses and farming. He led a 4-H club for many years. He was active in his church, holding many offices and sang in the choir for years. He was President of the Dawson County Farm Bureau and also held a State office. He was a 56-year member of the Eustis American Legion.

Greeting him in heaven are his parents, Gustav and Dora; sister Elmyra; brother Edward Hueftle and sister Lola Schuck McConnell.

Survivors include his wife, Janice of over 66 years; daughter Karla (Hueftle) Bartuff, Gothenburg, son Lee (Sherry) Hueftle, Eustis, daughter Donnis (Chip) Bullock, Broken Bow, son Neil (Anita) Hueftle, Cozad, son Nolan (Julie) Hueftle, Broken Bow, and son Gil (Lori) Hueftle, Omaha; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Kristine (Dell) Moninger, Caleb, Keeley and Kane, Kara (Brett) Herman, Lukas and Liam, Kevan (Nicole) and Chesley Hueftle, Kimberly Bartruff and Kathryn, Jacob (Chelsey) and Aiden Hueftle, Conrad Hueftle, Morgan Hueftle, Anson (Joleen) Hueftle, Aaron Hueftle, Isaac Hueftle, Rachael Hueftle.

A memorial has been established in his memory. Online condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. Services were Nov. 12, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eustis with Pastor Neil Kloppenborg officiating. Burial was at the East Cemetery, Eustis. Visitation was Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Eustis.
