Kenneth Blair Johnson 1921-2012
Kenneth Blair Johnson, 91, Sturgis, died Aug. 27, 2012, at his residence in Sturgis.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Willard Olsen officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard followed at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial to a Veterans organization of the donors choice.
Ken was born April 26, 1921, at Sturgis, SD, to Arthur M. and Anna (Blair) Johnson. He grew up on the family homestead and attended the Cottonwood country school. He graduated from Sturgis High School and attended college at the School of Mines in Rapid City for one year as well as one year at the agricultural school in Brookings. He enlisted in the United States Army. He served with the Air Corps in Saipan as a mechanic on B-29 Bombers. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the family ranch where he met his future wife.
Ken married Donna Roth on Sept. 11, 1946, in Sturgis. Together, they returned to the ranch where they lived until recently moving to Sturgis.
Ken was a member of the National Cattleman’s Association, South Dakota Stockgrowers, former supervisor of the Elk Creek Conservation District, Grace Lutheran Church, and a 50 plus year member of Olive Branch Lodge Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Johnson, Sturgis; sons, Dr. Carl Johnson, Sturgis, and Dale (Effie) Johnson, Vale; daughter, Susan (Bob) Heibult, Sturgis; grandchildren, Corey, Brett, Eric, Brooke, Kristin, Scott, Amanda, and Sarah; and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Orville.
