LaVer Holland: 1938-2016
LaVer Holland, 78 of Pierre, died Saturday, October 22 at her home. LaVer was born in Mobridge, SD August 3, 1938 to Lloyd and Millie Davidson. She graduated high school in Mobridge and then attended South Dakota State and Arizona State Colleges. She married Derry Jensen of Mobridge in November of 1959. They lived there raising four beautiful daughters until 1982 when LaVer moved to Sturgis and worked at Tri-State Livestock News. LaVer married Dr. Sam Holland in 1984 and moved to Pierre where they resided until the time of death.
LaVer was a cowgirl and rodeo queen at Mobridge Stampede as well as both colleges she attended. Those who shared her passion for training, showing and riding horses were her best friends since preschool.
LaVer was most proud of her daughters and grandchildren and loved them dearly. She spent long hours and days helping train and transport her daughters with their horses to 4-H and high school rodeos. LaVer was very talented artistically and enjoyed painting, crafts, quilting and playing piano. LaVer played a big part in the large Mobridge Hospital Bazaar and was an avid bridge player. In her later years, she especially enjoyed the company of her small coffee group and her circle group from Lutheran Memorial. LaVer was especially proud of over 10 years of volunteer work for the South Dakota Cultural and Heritage Center and was proud of all associated with that organization.
LaVer’s love for Sam shone throughout the 32 years of their marriage. She admired his character and his profession. LaVer enjoyed traveling and fishing with him and loved his children and grandchildren as if her own. Her unending love toward Sam was especially apparent towards the last stage of her illness when she would light up to only his presence and voice. LaVer passed away peacefully at home from advanced Alzheimer’s disease with help from family, special caregiver Glennis Pearson, and under expert assistance from Avera’s at Home Care and Hospice.
