Robert Lee Anderson: 1922-2016
Robert Lee Anderson, 93, of Platte, S.D., passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016 at Platte Care Center Avera. Robert Lee Anderson was born on Dec. 3, 1922 to William R. and Bessie (Charamza) Anderson in Platte, S.D. He completed Hamilton Grade School, graduated from Platte High School – where he excelled in track and attended college at California Polytechnic School in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He farmed and ranched at Pringle, Alexandria and Mobridge, worked at his Dad’s café in 1941, and raised turkeys on the 5-Mile Ranch. On February 9, 1948 Bob was united in marriage to Evelyn Turnis at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Platte, where he was a member. To this union three children were born: Gale, Keith and Robert. They were together until Evelyn’s passing on November 27, 1972.
Robert had owned and operated the Platte Livestock Auction. He worked at a creamery in Platte and then owned Platte Implement until 1992 when he sold the business to his sons, Gale and Keith. Bob was united in marriage to Delores Vander Zee on December 3, 1973 at the First Reformed Church in Platte.
Bob took pride in raising champion Quarter Horses and Appaloosa horses. He was a friend to all animals, taking special care of his cats and dogs. He brought the first full blood Gelbvieh bull into the United States, and he farmed using center pivot irrigation. Bob served as president of the Platte Commercial Club and was an avid hunter.
Grateful for having shared in Bob’s life: his wife of nearly 43 years, Delores Anderson of Platte, SD; three sons: Gale Anderson of Platte, SD, Keith (Jane) Anderson of Platte, SD and Bob (Candy) Anderson of Boyceville, Wisc. three grandchildren: Cole Anderson of Platte, SD, Stuart (Lindsey) Anderson of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Braden Anderson of Platte, S.D., three great grandchildren: Caleb, Brody and Kaylee Anderson of Rock Rapids, Iowa, two sisters-in-law: Thomasine Anderson and Ruth Anderson; in-laws: Mary Turnis, Arlene Weber, Ellen (Paul) Samuelson, Mary (Dean) Antonsen, Wilma (Loren) Menning, Elaine Dyk and Vivian (Alvin) Groenweg; along with many nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Anderson; his parents, William and Bessie Anderson; four siblings: John Anderson in infancy, Casper Anderson, Alice (Maurice) Marlowe and Bernard “Boots” Anderson; parents-in-law, Herman and Margaret Turnis; and in-laws: Joe Turnis, Vernon Weber, Ken Dyk, Jenatte Nyenhuis, Henry Alfred Nyenhuis and Viola (Van) VanDerWerff.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 A.M. Thursday, December 1, 2016 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Platte. A Committal Service will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 5 – 7 p.m., Wednesday, November 30, 2016 with a 7 P.M. Wake Service. Mount Funeral Home of Platte is assisting with arrangements.
