William “Bill” Barnes: 1928-2013
William “Bill” Barnes, 85, Spearfish, SD, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Bill was born Jan. 6, 1928, to L.O. “Barney” and Edith (Jensen) Barnes at Lakefield, MN. He spent his early years in the Lakefield area, moving to Faith, SD, at the age of 15. His family then moved to Mobridge, SD, where he attended school. He quit high school and went to work for the railroad. He was then recruited into the U.S. Army, serving in Japan during the occupation. After his time in the service he returned to Mobridge, where he met and married Violet Huber on Aug. 6, 1950. They lived in Mobridge, Dupree and then in Fort Pierre, where they raised their family. He owned a trucking company and worked at the Fort Pierre and Highmore Livestock Auctions. Being a self-taught auctioneer, he then moved to Belle Fourche, where he worked at the Belle Fourche and St. Onge Livestock Auctions and the Bowman Livestock Auction. He retired in 2008. Bill and Violet also enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 25 years.
Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years, Violet, Spearfish; children, Debbie (Bill) Myers, St. Onge; Rhonda (Terry) Lawhon, Garden City, KS; Billie Curtis, Belle Fourche; Sherri Stoeser, Pierre, and Barney Barnes, Newell; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and five sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral Services were at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at the United Church of Christ in Belle Fourche, with Reverend Del Neumeister officiating. Burial followed at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established to the Belle Fourche High School Rodeo Club or the Belle Fourche United Church of Christ.
