Ontario feedlot owners use advancing technology to maximize profits through ‘Under the Hide’ program
Over the next two years, through a program dubbed “Under the Hide,” the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) will be gathering ultrasound data on 15,000 cattle that make their way through Ontario packing plants. Scanning activities and processing of the resulting data will be completed by Beef Improvement Opportunities (BIO), an Ontario producer-owned organization in Guelph. Objectives of the program include providing hands-on carcass quality data intended to assist Ontario beef producers in improving beef quality.
“We’ll also select a DNA sample from each animal that’s scanned and use that sample to conduct further genomic study of the animals,” Jason Koudys, BIO Field Service Representative, says. Koudys will complete the majority of the scans.
