What a day for Pieper Red Angus! It started early as it was a beautiful sunny day after some early spring snow earlier in the week.
Mark and Deb Pieper, along with their son, Tate, have built a breeding herd of Red Angus cattle that just won’t take the back seat. This year’s set of bulls were one for the record, not so much for what they brought, but for what they were. These bulls had drawn a lot of pre-sale attention, and the bulls in that front pen were tired by sale time, just from all the different Red Angus breeders sorting through them.
This sale stayed strong all the way through and that was true of the females as well. I wish everyone in the business could have seen this great set of cattle. The cattle have a tremendous amount of eye appeal with a lot of natural thickness and muscle bred in.
Top selling bull of the day was Lot 2, PIE The Cowboy Kind 343. Here was a son of Buf Crk The Right Kind U199. He was out of a daughter of Pie Code Red 9058 who had an MPPA of 103.2. With an 83 lb. birth weight, he weaned at 808 lb. and posted a yearling weight of 1,410 lb. His EPDs were BW 1.7, WW 70, YW 114, TM 52, and MARB 0.47. He scanned a 15.5 sq. in. rib eye area and an IMF of 5.29 to ratio 129. After much spirited bidding, he sold to McEntire Red Angus, Sweetwater, Okla., for $75,000.
Lot 4 sold for $49,000 to Tim Dewey, Cimarron, Kan. Pie Right Time 347 was out of Buf Crk The Right Kind U199 and out of a PIE Code Red daughter. His EPDs were BW -1.5, WW 74, YW 119, MILK 20, and TM 57, and MARB. 0.46. He had a large rib eye of 16.18. sq. in.
Power Plus Cattle, Hobart, Okla., chose Lot 8 at $40,000. He was, perhaps, the stoutest Red Angus bull I’ve ever seen. He was by Buf Crk The Right Kind U199 and out of a Sand Hills daughter with an MPPA of 107.6. With a birth weight EPD of -3.2, he put up fantastic growth numbers. He weaned at 893 lb. to ratio 119, and a yearling weight of 1,503 lb. to ratio 117.
Lot 1 sold for $31,000 to the L83 Ranch, West Hope, N.D., He was by LSF Saga 1040 Y and out of a Code Red daughter with an MPPA of 102.8. His IMF was 5.75 to ratio 140.
