Pine Creek Angus Ranch 2012 Bull Sale

Dan Piroutek

Lyle Weiss with Cliff Matt from Red Owl, SD.

Pine Creek Angus Ranch, owned by Lyle and Miriam Weiss and their son, Justin and his wife, Lacey, hosted a good crowd for their annual production sale at Faith Livestock. The weather was nice and allowed for a good-sized crowd to come and evaluate this good set of cattle. The welcome mat was out and the Weiss family and the bidders both enjoyed a successful day.

The Pine Creek herd is one of the most maternally bred herds in South Dakota. The heart of this cowherd started from Sitz Angus, and many of the herd bulls have been purchased from Sitz, or have Sitz blood in them.

They have also added a bull, Ideal 9512 of 5570 7814, from Jorgenson Angus of Ideal, SD. He is a calving ease bull that seems to be pretty good on carcass quality. There were 23 sons of him in the catalog, and they were very well received.

There was also excellent demand on the open heifers to start the sale.

The top-selling bull of the day was Lot 15 selling to repeat buyer Randy Clark, Quinn, SD, for $9,250. This bull was a son of Ideal 9512 of 5570 7814, and out of a daughter of Pine Creek Right Time 1147. With a 92-pound birth weight, he weaned at 671 pounds to ratio 106 and posted a yearling weight of 1,268 pounds to ratio 109. He was the heaviest bull in the sale, weighing in at 1,382 pounds. Other stats included a 37-cm scrotal and a 14.2 square inch ribeye area.

Bar JV Angus, Fairview, MT, bought Lot 13 at $7,500. He was a son of Ideal 9512 of 5570 7814 and was a calving ease bull. His EPDs were CED 9, BW -0.9, WW 47, Milk 24 and YW 92. Born at 70 pounds, he weaned at 660 pounds and had a yearling weight of 1,279 pounds.
