PRCA news and notes from the rodeo trail for Jan. 3

• Longtime contestant and PRCA judge Del Nose has returned to coach the Northwest College (Powell, WY) rodeo team after a 19-month hiatus during which he managed a ranch in Montana. Nose coached the Trappers from 1998-2010. “I’m thrilled to be back,” Nose told the Powell Tribune. “I’m looking forward to doing some recruiting and making it to the national finals with some quality team members.”

• PRCA Gold Card member Walter Griva, a team roper who competed for many years at California Rodeo Salinas and the Grand National Rodeo at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, died Dec. 21 at his Salinas home. He was 81. Griva won money at most of the biggest regional rodeos of his day including the Chowchilla Stampede, Oakdale Rodeo and the San Jose Firefighters Rodeo

• Wade Sundell, who has finished among the top three saddle bronc riders in the world standings the last two years, appeared at the Iowa State University Extension Outreach Program Fun Day on Dec. 27 to tell second and third grade students about his life in rodeo. Sundell showed the kids a video of his 90-point ride on legendary Miss Congeniality (“one of the best bucking horses that’s ever been”), his riding gear including his saddle (“this is my office”) and talked to them about the perils of his chosen sport (“I’ve been hooked, run over and stepped on”).
