PRCA statement of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1)

The PRCA is closely monitoring the situation of reported cases of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) that were reportedly first clinically diagnosed in horses that attended the National Cutting Horse Association’s Western National Championships in Ogden, UT, conducted April 29-May 8. The virus is contagious among horses, but is NOT transmittable to humans. The PRCA is working to share factual information with our members.

At this time, state animal health officials indicate that there are no transportation restrictions for horses, and the confirmed cases are in horses that were at the Ogden cutting horse show or in direct contact with horses from that show. The PRCA is encouraging its members to educate themselves and contact their local veterinarians for advice on their particular situation.
