Raven Angus ’56 Years in the Angus Business’ Performance Production Sale

Dan Piroutek

Raven Angus is owned by the Petersek family and represents three generations in the Angus business as RJ and Reed’s grandfather, Ray, still lives on the family ranch. If you ask Ray, he will still give you an opinion, too.

Rod Petersek and his sons, R.J. and Reed, hosted a big crowd for their bull sale at their ranch near Colome, SD, in the south central part of the state. The weather on sale day was less than perfect with 2-6 inches of new snow in the surrounding areas.

This family works very hard, evidenced by the number of calves they purchase and feed on their ranch. With their backgrounding program, they follow these cattle all the way to the packer. Because of this, they know what genetics they have to provide to their customers – carcass and production traits that it takes to survive in this industry.

This year’s set of bulls was well grown and readily received by this large crowd of mostly repeat buyers. Their catalog includes complete scan data, plus ratings for $F, $G and $B. Also included are carcass EPDs, along with all the usual EPDs.

The top selling bull of the day sold to Ron DeMers from Colome, SD, for $7,750. This Lot 50 bull was a son of CRA Bexton 872 5205 608, and out of a daughter of Lemmon Newsline who had ratioed 116 on her first calf. EPDs included BW +2.2, WW +57, Milk +30 and YW +95. With a birth weight of 78 lbs. and a weaning weight of 762 lbs., he had a 36.7 cm scrotal measurement and a pelvic scan of 210 cm.

John Anderson from Plainview, NE, chose Lot 24 at $7,000. This son of Connealy Thunder was out of a daughter of GAR Retail Product, and hit the ground at 79 lbs. He weaned at 722 lbs. and posted a yearling weight of 1,429 lbs. He scanned a ribeye area of 14.2 square inches, and had EPDs of BW +1.0, WW +49, Milk +28 and YW +99.

Lot 43, a son of CAR Efficient 534, was the top selection for Larry Baumster from Stuart, NE. He was out of a daughter of SA Neutron 377 who had ratioed 105 on six calves. Born at 80 lbs., he weaned at 767 lbs. and attained a yearling weight of 1,479 lbs. EPDs of BW +0.3, WW +58, Milk +28 and YW +109 completed his resume. He sold for $6,750.

Long-time repeat buyer, Ken Hrabanek, from Colome, SD, bought Lot 57 at $6,500. He was by TC Total and out of a daughter of Woodhill Admiral 77K. With an 86-lb. birth weight, a weaning weight of 729 lbs., and a yearling weight of 1,327 lbs., this bull was ready to go to work.

At $6,000, Lot 18 was headed home with Dale Krumpus from Colome, SD. This son of BC Matrix 4132 was out of a Bushwacker 41-93 daughter.

A great day for the Petersek family, despite the weather! You will hear a lot more from this operation as these young men have all the enthusiasm that it takes to be successful.
