The annual Red Western Red Angus Bull sale was held at Crawford Livestock, Crawford, NE on April 8, 2011. The sale was hosted by Brad and Trixie Grill, B Lazy T Ranch, and Jeff and Diana Grill, Grill Cattle Co., and their families. Guest consignor to this year’s sale was Fick Red Angus with a handful of two-year-old bulls.

Brothers Brad and Jeff Grill run their Red Angus cattle with the commercial cattleman in mind. They co-manage a large 1,000-plus commercial cow-calf ranch in the southwestern corner of South Dakota, so there is very little extra time to micro-manage the registered herd. These cattle need to fend for themselves in the rugged southern regions of the Black Hills. Since the start the registered herd, they have focused on a mother cow that is moderate framed, easy calving and easy fleshing and can raise a big calf. The bulls in the sale will produce thick calves that will be sought after for the feedlot and the replacement pen. With yearling and fall bulls and two-year-old bulls from Fick Red Angus, there was a bull to fit any cattleman’s operation and price range.

Topping the fall yearling bulls was Lot 23, Grill Gold Rush 2W, a 8/29/09 son of RHRA Gold Rush 402 17T. This bull has EPDs of BW -1.7, WW 30, YW 60, Milk 22 and TM 37. The bull sold to Huber Red Angus, Oelrichs, SD, for $10,000.
