Reports: Clinton could support TPP, Portman opposes
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday evening that she could support the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement with some changes, while Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, a former U.S. trade representative, announced he would oppose the deal.
At a presidential primary debate with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Clinton said, “There are changes I believe that would make a real difference, if they could be achieved,” Politico reported.
Clinton also noted that she had helped make to the U.S.-Korea free trade agreement negotiated by the George W. Bush administration, which led the United Auto Workers union to endorse that pact, Politico said.
Sanders, in a Wednesday press conference in New Hampshire, vowed to kill the TPP if he is elected, calling it “disastrous.”
Portman’s opposition signals the troubles TPP will have in gaining consideration, The New York Times reported.
