Reproduction expert Dick Vanderwall to speak at Copper Spring Ranch on Jan. 19
Dr. Dirk Vanderwall, DVM, Ph.D., Diplomate ACT; a renowned equine reproduction expert, is scheduled as the featured speaker for the Copper Spring Ranch (CSR) Equine Sports Medicine Center’s Winter Lecture Series on Jan. 19.
The specialist will cover “Reproduction Problems and Solutions” during the program which begins at 6 p.m. in the Copper Spring Ranch indoor arena near Bozeman, MT.
Vanderwall currently serves as an Associate Professor of Large Animal Reproduction in the Department of Clinical Studies at the New Bolton Center in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the chief of the Section of Reproduction Behavior and the director of the Georgia and Philip Hofmann Research Center for Animal Reproduction.
He received his DVM degree in 1986 from Cornell University and worked as the resident veterinarian on a Standardbred horse breeding farm in New York State for two years following his graduation. In 1989, he entered graduate school at the University of Idaho where he received his Ph.D. degree in animal physiology in 1992. In 1993, Vanderwall became a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists. From 1992 to 1994 he completed a post-doctoral research appointment at the University of Kentucky. From 1994 to 1999 he was an assistant professor at Colorado State University. From 1999 to 2009 he was an assistant and then associate professor at the University of Idaho. In 2009, Vanderwall accepted his current position at the University of Pennsylvania where he is involved in clinical service, teaching and research in large animal reproduction.

Brad Vercimak, a nutritionist from Nutrena, is scheduled to speak on the topic of “Feeding Your High Performance Horse” on Feb. 16.
The March 16 program is being presented by Dr. Ellis Farstvedt, DVM, MS, ACVS Boarded Surgeon, about “Lameness: How do we find it? How do we treat it?” Farstvedt is the managing veterinarian at the CSR Equine Sports Medicine Center. The lecture is being sponsored in part by Luitpold Pharmaceuticals and Merial. Dr. April L. Knudson, DVM, a member of the Merial Equine Veterinary Professional Services Team, will also speaking during the March program.
