Roberts endorses Rubio
February 19, 2016
Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., has reversed course and endorsed Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., for the Republican nomination for president and criticized New York businessman Donald Trump, The Wichita Eagle reported this week.
In a speech Wednesday to the Agri-Business Council of Wichita, Roberts said he would vote for Rubio in the Kansas Republican caucus on March 5, the Eagle reported.
Roberts also said he took as a "personal affront" Trump's statement at Saturday's Republican debate that President George W. Bush lied about there being weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the Eagle said.
Roberts chaired the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation into how the Bush administration gathered the intelligence that it used to justify the war, the Eagle noted.
Last month Roberts told The Hagstrom Report that he was too busy with the business of the Senate Agriculture Committee to get involved in the presidential nomination process and that he would support the party's nominee.
