Rural Women in Ag Conference set for Sept. 24-25 at Spearfish Canyon Lodge
The annual Rural Women in Ag Conference will be held Sept. 24-25 at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge. The focus for this year’s conference will be on “survival strategies” with an emphasis on finding success in the ability to adapt.
Conference organizers say this year’s program features a new shorter format and a new scenic location. The Spearfish Canyon Lodge is considered a perfect place for participants to come learn, laugh and recharge.
Thursday evening, Sept. 24, a preconference workshop and meal will be held at the Lodge and Latchstring restaurant. The workshop will focus on tools to enhance communication. Following the meal, a series of fun activities will be offered. Options will include scrapbooking, sewing, chair massages and hiking to the nearby Falls.
On Friday, the event will kick-off with keynote speaker Linda Chamberlain, a scientist, author, professor and dog musher. She has combined her public health career with her passion for dog mushing and rural living. Chamberlain will share the inspirational stories of northern Alaskan women who have created their own financial independence through self employment.
Additional sessions through the day will focus on:
• social networking as a tool for marketing, staying connected or informing and educating others about agriculture;
• understanding environmental livestock regulations and how they may pertain to your operation;
• finding alternatives for healthy snacks;
• and hearing from a panel of entrepreneurs on the aspects of starting a business and pitfalls to avoid.
The conference will wrap up at 3 p.m. so participants can return home – or can enjoy the weekend in the Black Hills.
The registration fee for the conference is $70 if paid by Sept. 11. For more information contact the Meade Co. Extension office at 605-347-2436 or e-mail email@example.com. The South Dakota Women in Ag also have a presence on http://www.facebook.com if you search South Dakota rural women.
