S.D. honey production stats
Sioux Falls S.D., March 21, 2014 – Honey production in 2013 from South Dakota producers with five or more colonies totaled 14.8 million pounds, down 9 percent from 2012, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. South Dakota ranked third in the nation for honey production, behind North Dakota and Montana.
There were 265,000 honey producing colonies in South Dakota during 2013, up 2 percent from 2012. Yield per colony was 56 pounds per colony, down from 63 pounds per colony in 2012. Producer stocks were 6.38 million pounds on December 15, 2013 up from 3.60 million pounds a year earlier.
Prices for the 2013 crop averaged 206 cents per pound, up from 195 cents in 2012. Prices were based on retail sales by producers and sales to private processors and cooperatives. Total value of honey produced in 2013 was 30.6 million dollars, down 4 percent from 2012.
