Pierre, S.D. – South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture Lucas Lentsch this week joined other state agriculture department leaders for the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) organization's Winter Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. As chair of the Rural Development and Financial Security Committee, Lentsch also led that committee's discussion of important issues on transportation infrastructure and initiatives for military veterans in agriculture.
As a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Secretary Lentsch knows the challenges of post-military service transition and says state departments of agriculture can provide necessary tools for veterans to progress into the agricultural industry.
"Together with USDA, our state departments of agriculture can provide assistance to help our veterans into agricultural careers as farmers, ranchers and leaders within our vast food production system contributing to the health, welfare and security of rural America," said Secretary Lentsch.
Other issues discussed included country of original labeling, Farm Bill implementation, reviewing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and international trade.
