for Tri-State Livestock News
Chamberlain, SD – I Am SDQHA Proud was the theme for the 2013 South Dakota Quarter Horse Association Convention, Banquet and Year-End Awards Presentation. Now in it’s 66th year, the SDQHA is a statewide membership dedicated to the promotion of the American Quarter Horse. Great weather greeted the membership to the Cedar Shore Resort on the west bank of the Missouri River near Oacoma on Saturday, Jan. 18.
The SDQHA Executive Committee met on Friday evening and reconvened on Saturday morning finalizing the association business. The main topic of discussion was the SDQHA Summer Shootout – the association-sponsored Quarter Horse Show Circuit held in Brookings, S.D., each June. The success of this event is directly targeted to the many members that volunteer their time and efforts to keep the event running smoothly and allow it to grow each year. The SDQHA general membership met in the afternoon and included the elections of their newest Board Of Directors.
Newly elected officers to the 2014 SDQHA Executive Committee are President Kerry Papendick, Rapid City and Vice-President Jodie Svennes, Toronto. Kristen Gonsoir from Groton was reappointed as the association Secretary/Treasurer and Webmaster of their site http://www.sdqha.com. AQHA Director at large is Dr. R.M. Christensen along with Director Emeritus Jim Hootman, both from Harrisburg. SDQHA was honored in 2013 with the elevation of National Director Georga Sutton from Gettysburg to the elite position as an AQHA Honorary Vice-President at the convention in Houston, Texas last March.
The SDQHYA also met midday for their annual membership meeting and elected their new officers for 2014. Sentel Johnson, Belle Fourche, will serve as their new President. Vice President Gina Elmore, Hot Springs, Secretary Jade Gaukel, Yankton, Treasurer Allison Longhenry, Sioux Falls, and Reporters Madelyn Seidel, Bison, (West River) and Cassandra Townsend, Andover, (East River) complete the 2014 SDQHYA youth board.
Special award winners announced at the evening awards presentation included the 2013 SDQHA Sportsmanship Winner Amy Krueger, Ferney, and the 2013 Most Valuable Professional Horseman Kristen Gonsoir from Groton.
