Sandhills Cattle Association Ranch Tour set for Jan. 21 in Thedford area
January 12, 2012
The Sandhills Cattle Association’s 22nd Annual Ranch Tour has been set for Saturday, Jan. 21 in the Thedford, NE area. The tour will include stops at: Dailey Angus Ranch, Flying A Cattle Company, Pearson’s Livestock Equipment, Hoffman Ranch and the Reed Hamilton Ranch.
Registration will be held from 8:30-9 a.m. (CST) at Dailey Angus Ranch, which is located 6 miles east of Thedford on Highway 2 and one-quarter mile north on McMillan Avenue. The tour begins at 9 a.m.
Lemoyne and Rhonda Dailey have a registered Angus seedstock operation and a commercial cowherd, both of which calve in May and June. Pastures are grazed rotationally with larger groups of cattle that are moved frequently. The rough hills on the ranch offer the livestock winter protection and the cattle are fed hay only if the grass is snowed under.
The Anderson family has owned Flying A Cattle Company for four generations. The cow-calf-yearling to feedlot operation includes the ranch at Thedford, the Dumb Bell Ranch at Hyannis and a farm and feedlot in Red Oak, IA. Flying A Cattle Company utilizes Angus genetics and a rotational grazing system.
Pearson’s Livestock Equipment Company began in the early 1960s building headgates. Jack and Gail Johnston purchased the company from Bud Pearson after working for him for almost 20 years. They have expanded the business and now sell livestock handling equipment in 15 countries. Pearson’s employs 16 full-time and three part-time employees.
The complimentary lunch will be served in the sale facility at the Hoffman Ranch before touring the operation. Hoffmans relocated to Nebraska in 2008, but have been in the purebred Hereford business for over 50 years. They have sold cattle around the country and internationally, but their main focus is selling commercial range bulls to customers in the Sandhills. They market over 100 Hereford bulls annually.

The Reed Hamilton Ranch was homesteaded in 1898. Dave and Loretta Hamilton run a cow-calf operation of Angus-Simmental Hybrids. Some yearlings are grazed and occasionally yearlings are finished on the ranch. There are 300 acres under pivot irrigation for corn and alfalfa production. The Hamiltons also manage a deer hunting outfitter service.
The tour is open to the public. Participants will need to provide their own transportation and carpooling is encouraged.
In order to plan for the noon meal, pre-registration before Jan. 13 is appreciated.
