Schmidt Cattle Company, owned by Randy and Marj Schmidt, hosted a big crowd of aggressive bidders on a very nice day in Rushville, Neb., for their annual bull sale.

This good herd has been providing top Charolais genetics for over 50 years. They also feed cattle at their farm, and they try to buy their customers’ calves first. Right now they have about 1,300 head of their customers’ Charolais cross cattle on hand. There is no better testament to a program than to see that many high-performing cattle sired by their bulls. The Schmidt bull influence has added pounds of growth and helped the cattle to achieve the muscle desired for highly rated carcass traits.

This year’s set of bulls was the most uniform that they have ever offered. The sale started out strong and stayed that way until the end. Many repeat buyers were on hand, along with a few new ones to make for a very competitive sale.

Top selling bull of the day was Lot 79A, a son of TR Mr. Pacer 815. He was out of a SCC Impressive daughter. He sold for $12,000 to Utopia Genetics, Grove Springs, Mo. He had gained 4.26 lb. a day on test, and he had a yearling weight of 1,309 lb. to ratio 109. This bull had a long, level hip that was simply packed full of muscle. He measured a 38 cm. scrotal and had a rib eye area of 17.23 sq. in.

Repeat buyer Denny Hulm, Meadow, S.D., paid $10,500 for Lot 37A, the first bull in the ring. This was a deep-sided, thick-made bull, sired by PVF Cad 0731 Pld, and out of a daughter of LT Brave Wind. Born at 90 lb., he weaned at 751 lb. to ratio 116. He had a yearling weight of 1,378 lb. to ratio 112. His EPDs were BW -0.5, WW 42, YW 73, MILK 3, and TM 24.

Lot 53A sold to long time customer, Keri Votruba, Hemingford, Neb., at $10,500. He was another deep-sided, thick-made bull sired by TR PZC NC Crossfire 1763 ET, and out of a daughter of LT Easy Pro 1158 Pld.
