October 30, 2008
INDIANAPOLIS “The South Dakota State FFA Officers, helped decide the future direction of the National FFA Organization this fall at the 81st National FFA Convention. Attracting more than 50,000 members and guests, this is the world’s largest annual student convention.
Brian Gottlob, President; Shad Christman, Vice President; Wyatt DeJong, Secretary; Shane Gross, Treasurer; Josh Johnson, Reporter and Maria Skoglund, Sentinel represented the state as official delegates to the convention, October 22- 25, in Indianapolis. They joined other FFA members in conducting the business of the National FFA Organization during special sessions of the convention.
Closely reflecting the operation of the U.S. government, participating in the delegate process gives students the opportunity to experience government in action. The experience began this summer, with the State Presidents’ Conference. During this event, leadership delegates discussed issues that needed to be addressed at the convention. Those issues were forwarded to the full-delegate body during the 81st National FFA Convention. Based on population, 475 members of FFA represented the organization as delegates.
At convention, delegates broke into committees, heard testimony on five issues, and addressed the whole delegate body with their findings. The next step was to take action on these issues and forward recommendations to the National FFA Board of Directors who will address them in January.
The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 507,763 student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture – as part of 7,439 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
