SDCA to host annual convention and trade show

The South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association (SDCA) is proud to announce their 66th Annual Convention and Trade Show Dec. 3-4, 2014 at the Aberdeen Ramkota Conference Center.

“SDCA’s Annual Convention and Trade Show is always an excellent opportunity to relax and recharge with fellow beef producers and allied industry representatives from across South Dakota,” said Cory Eich, SDCA President. “Just like in our cattle operations, the convention is a mix of business and fun. We accomplish the important work of the association, but also strive to incorporate plenty of education and entertainment.”

The convention will kick off with a Welcome Reception on December 2 celebrating “Cowboy Culture – South Dakota Style” with the musical stylings of Paul Larson, a singer, songwriter and cowboy musician from Rochford, S.D., who will entertain attendees while they network with fellow cattlemen and trade show vendors.

On Wednesday morning, Cattlemen’s College will feature two great speakers with tips to enhance profitability. Carolyn Thompson of Thompson Law, will provide insight on estate planning, which is of utmost importance for family agricultural businesses. She will provide tips on how to “Keep a Family, a Family & a Farm, a Farm.” Dr. Kent Anderson from Zoetis will wrap up the Cattlemen’s College by discussing the benefits of genetics testing for your cow herd.

During SDCA’s Young Producers’ Council meeting on Wednesday morning, Bonnie Dybedahl will present SD Farm Bureau’s “F@ST” (First at Scene Training), providing information on how to approach, analyze and react to common rural accidents.

Wednesday’s lunch crowd will hear from National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Policy Division Chairman Craig Uden from Nebraska. Attendees will want to hear Craig’s insights about the current political landscape in Washington, DC and NCBA’s recent activities. John Lundeen, NCBA Senior Director of Market Research, will also share some successes of the current beef checkoff with his Beef Consumer Insights presentation.

The ladies are invited to join the SD Cattlemen’s Auxiliary for their Paint & Pour Social on Wednesday afternoon. Participants will paint a winter scene while enjoying South Dakota wine.

Wednesday evening kicks off with the popular President’s Auction, followed by the Awards Banquet where SDCA’s Cattleman of the Year, Agribusiness of the Year, and Media award winners will be honored. The event will also feature the Leopold Conservation Award presentation to the Rock Hills Ranch and the Perman Family of Lowry, SD. Attendees will be awed and amused by Lee Cole’s Magicomedy act to end the evening. Lee Cole uses everything and everyone in the room and his playful and lively presentation is sure to leave you smiling.

Following the Annual Membership Meeting on Thursday morning, attendees will want to stick around to hear from CattleFax analyst, Troy Applehans, who will provide a market outlook for 2015.
