SDPPC honors Odegaard family
The South Dakota Pork Producers Council recognized the Odegaard Family with the 1st Annual Family of the Year Award during awards luncheon on Jan. 15.
This is a new award that South Dakota Pork Producers Council offered this year. The award was created to honor a pork-producing family who has contributed to the long-term success of the industry through leadership and pork promotion on the local, state or /and national level.
Odegard farms began back when Randy’s grandpa started raising Chester Whites and then turned the operation over to Randy’s dad in the early 1930’s.
Randy Odegaard of Lake Preston, SD has been involved in pork production all his life, and was a partner with his dad, Marvin and brother Wayne Odegaard since the beginning until 2004. Since 2005 this partnership grew to include Michelle Malone, Sharon Odegaard, Shane Odegaard, Shaun Odegaard and Justin Odegaard, known as Odegaard Family Farms. Odegaard Farms operates the 600-head farrow to finish farm. Along with the hog farm, Odegaard’s operate a cow-calf operation and also a diversified cropping operation.
Randy Odegaard resides on the farm at which he was born with his wife Glenda. They have 2 children; his daughter, Michelle, an SDSU grad with a degree in Animal Science, remains in partnership with Odegaard Family Farms. His son, Jason, currently lives in Loveland, Co with his family. Randy has served on most of the committees at the state level and continues to remain active on committees. He is currently serving on the Demand Enhancement and Public Policy Committee. He was on the Consumer Product Marketing Committee when the Council started up the famous Taste of Elegance. He has served as a SDPPC executive board member for more than 12 years, including serving as President in 1994. Randy also served on the National Federation Council.
Michelle and her husband Chad have 2 children. Chad is an agronomist at Mid-State Agronomy.
Sharon Odegaard and the late Wayne Odegaard have 5 children, Shane, Jadd, Shaun, Josh and Justin. Wayne and Josh were killed in a farming accident in 2004.
Shane and his wife Rebecca have 4 children. Rebecca is an accountant. Shane is presently serving on the SDPPC executive board since 2013. Shane has served on several committees at the state level. He is currently serving on the Annual Meeting and Trade Show, Association Services & Membership and Public Policy Committee.
Shaun and his wife Kristi have 3 children. Kristi works in IT at the Lake Preston School.
Justin and his wife Jenna have 1 child. Jenna is the preschool teacher at Hamlin School. Justin has served on several committees at the state level and continues to remain active on committees. He is currently serving on the Demand Enhancement and Association Services & Membership committees. He has served as a SDPPC executive board member from 2007 to 2013. On the National level Justin sits on the NPB Animal Welfare Committee.
