SDSU Swine Specialist earns Pork award
Dr. Bob Thaler of Brookings, South Dakota was honored by the South Dakota Pork Producers Council (SDPPC) with the 2015 Pork All-American Award on Thursday, January 15 during the awards luncheon at their 46th Annual Pork Congress in Sioux Falls.
Through the Pork All-American award, the South Dakota Pork Producers Council acknowledges pork producers or industry members who have established themselves as dedicated, involved business people and leaders in their communities.
Dr. Bob Thaler grew up on a diversified farm by Wagner, South Dakota, and got his BS and MS degrees at SDSU. He joined the faculty at SDSU in 1988 after completing his PhD at Kansas State University in Swine Nutrition and currently serves as Professor and Extension Swine Specialist at South Dakota State University. Bob has been a part of many different Extension teams throughout the years with faculty from Ag Engineering, Vet Science, Economics, and Plant Science to meet the changing needs of producers, and also has been very active in many National Pork Board programs like PQA and TQA. Besides Extension work, Bob has also taught a variety of classes, is co-advisor to the SDSU Swine Club, and does applied nutrition and management research. Currently he is on the team helping build the new SDSU Swine Unit. Whether working with students, producers, urban and rural neighbors, or policy makers, Bob tries to always be a positive voice for South Dakota and US pork producers.
Some of the committees that Bob has served on include the Executive Committee of the National Swine Nutrition Guide, the National Pork Board’s Producer Education Executive Committee, and the American Society of Animal Science’s national Extension Committee. Bob currently serves on the SD Pork Producers Council’s Executive Board, and is a past-president of the SD Master Pork Producers. In February, he’ll be recognized as the Distinguished Alumni for the Kansas State University’s Dept of Animal Science and Industry.
He and his wife Karen have three children: Allyse, Sarah Holt (and husband Dustin), and Noah.
