Second annual Prairie Tour set for Aug. 6 in Woonsocket

The 2008 Prairie Tour will be held Aug. 6 in Woonsocket, SD.
The grazing and grassland plants educational event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lodge at Feistner’s Hunting & Guide Service, located five miles west of Woonsocket on state Highway 34 and three and one-half miles south on 392nd Avenue.

Identification, palatability ratings, and the role of plants in the grazing system are among the topics of the tour.
South Dakota State University range science associate professor Sandy Smart will discuss how plants survive grazing. Hands-on plant identification in brome grass burn plots and a pheasant dinner will complete the morning portion of the event.
After lunch, Justin Jessop, a grasslands management and planning specialist with the South Dakota Grasslands Coalition, will speak about grazing systems. A tour of developing cross-fencing systems and plant identification contest will conclude the tour.
