Shawn Burghduff Memorial Calf Show set for Valentine’s Day
The 8th Annual Shawn Burghduff Memorial Calf Show will be held on Feb 14, 2015, at the Burgduff Ranch indoor arena located north of Camp Crook, South Dakota. The show consists of pens of three heifers that are judged and pens of three bulls on display. The cattle are all yearlings or coming yearlings.
Each rancher that brings a pen of heifers pays $100 to show, with the money going to the community center of their choice. Spectators can participate by buying a judging card and competing for prizes for their judging skills. The money the spectators spend on judging cards is also divided up amongst the various community centers. There will also be 4-H, FFA, and Youth Judging contests during the afternoon with the pens of heifers and bulls, plus sheep and hogs.
The pens of 3 heifers are judged by all of the ranchers who bring a pen. To pick the top five places, each owner judges all the pens except their own. The pens of 3 bulls are entered for display only, however the owner pays the $100 that goes to the community center of their choice.
Total prizes for the afternoon will be in excess of $2,000. The previous seven shows have raised nearly $40,000 for the local community centers. “It’s been a nice way to do something in memory of Shawn,” says Gerald Burghduff, Shawn’s dad. “He was really involved in the community and would have liked what it’s done for the community centers around here.”
Gerald added “Many of the local community centers are on very tight budgets and find it hard to make repairs and improvements, so we’re hoping that we can double the yearly proceeds to the community centers by having sponsors donating $10 or more for each pen of calves that is entered in the show, with a maximum of 40 pens.”
Shawn Burghduff was born and raised in Harding County on the ranch where the show is held. He was active in 4-H and football while growing up and was a member of the local fire department, Roping Club, Lutheran church, and a director on the Harding County Stockgrowers board. Shawn and his wife Alicia and son Dane, born in 2002, lived on the Burghduff Ranch, working alongside his folks, Gerald and Becky. Shawn died in 2004 at age 28 of an apparent brain aneurysm following a long battle with viral encephalitis.
The Burghduffs would like to invite everyone to come and join them for a fun afternoon of livestock viewing and judging, visiting with friends and fundraising for a great cause. They also encourage ranchers to bring their cattle. There will be a lunch on the premises all day.
For more information on sponsoring livestock pens or to enter a pen, please contact Shawn’s sister Natalie Glines at 605-797-4667 or Gerald Burghduff at 605-797-4441. Directions to the ranch are: 11 miles north on North Camp Crook Road, and 1 1/2 miles east of Camp Crook, South Dakota.
