Shearers to host Veterans benefit on Dec. 17 in New York

The American Sheep Shearers Council (ASSC) is hosting a shearing event at Kyle Farms near Avon, NY, to benefit the Farmer-Veteran Coalition (FVC) on Dec. 17. Coordinators for this event are Elaine Bristol, Matt Kyle and Doug Rathke.

“Professional shearers will shear 1,000 ewes in one day in honor of the men and women who have served our country since September 11,” said Doug Rathke, long-time U.S. Shearing Team member for the ASSC. “Not only will this event provide an opportunity to promote the shearing industry, but the proceeds will be donated to an organization that is advocating agriculture and helping America’s veterans.”

The FVC works to mobilize the food and farming community to create healthy and viable futures for America’s veterans by enlising their help in building a green economy, rebuilding rural communities and securing a safe and healthy food supply for all. The coalition seeks to simultaneously assist the farming community by developing a new generation of farmers and to help our returning veterans find viable careers and means to heal on America’s farms.

The ASSC is seeking sponsors for the event; in addition, individuals will be able to donate per head shorn to the FVC. To learn more about the event or to learn how to support the FVC through the event, visit the “American Sheep Shearers Council benefit for the Farmer Veteran Coalition” Facebook event or contact Kyle at 585-202-7768 or Bristol at 989-329-9551.
