Sheep raisers’ small grain tour in S.D.
July 15, 2014
SDSU has scheduled a tour with Dr. Dwayne Beck for Wednesday, July 9, at 1 p.m., CST pm at the Dakota Lakes Research Center 17 miles southeast of Pierre on Highway 34..
The group will gather for lunch at Pizza Ranch in Pierre at 11:30 a.m., CST and depart from there.
Tour organizers hope to prove the opportunity to able to observe the small grain and cool season forage production just before harvest which will begin the following week. Addtionally, observation of the progress of the warm season crops and discussion of the residue produced and the value of the residue for aftermath or residual grazing is planned.
"From a sheep producer's point of view, I am interested in finding opportunities for sheep to be on the landscape. The ability of sheep to make use of crop residue and cover crop vegetation could provide incentive for producers to introduce sheep into their operation," explained SDSU Sheep Field Specialist Dave Ollila.
