Shooting it up in the Dakota Territory
LENNOX, SD – The Dakota Territory Mounted Shooters, a local club, announces they will have the privilege of hosting the South Dakota State Cowboy Mounted Shoot July 19-20 at the Whitehead Arena south of Lennox. The Club is very excited for this opportunity and for being able to host the State event for the second year in a row.
“We have hosted a shoot in July the last three years, but being able to make it the South Dakota State Shoot is quite an honor – for our club, and for the town of Lennox. We are centrally located in the area, and hosting the shoot here allows competitors to come from the tri-state area and beyond,” club member Cassandra Swanson of Canton, SD explains.
Her husband, Steve, has been shooting off their horse, Harvey, for three years now. “It’s just a great sport,” Steve says, “and it is great for our club and the town of Lennox to host the State again.”
Cassandra reports that Lennox rolled out the red carpet again for the club, with many of the local businesses coming on board to sponsor door prizes, added cash purses, or other treats to be enjoyed during the competitors’ stay in Lennox. “You can’t put on an event of this caliber without help, especially with today’s economy. The City of Lennox has been great with many businesses pitching in, and even several businesses from Sioux Falls donated,” said Cassandra.
Last year, the shoot drew participants from across the state of South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and as far away as Kansas. “With our added money and great prizes, and the food/fuel amenities found here in Lennox, competitors were very happy coming to this little town,” she said.
What makes any sport even better is having a great crowd to cheer you on. There is no gate fees to watch the competition out at Whitehead arena just south of Lennox… just bring your lawn chair and sunscreen – or whatever else you need to be comfortable. There is room for canopies, and coolers are welcome, although great concessions will be available on site. Over 100 spectators attended last year, keeping the shooters on their toes to put on a great run. Inevitably, as with any horse sport, there is always some unplanned exciting action – that is what keeps it fun for the audience! Cowboy Mounted Shooting is a family event – children enjoy almost any activity that involves watching horses, and there is plenty of room for kids to play. Many of the competitors themselves are parent/child; husbands and wives and even grandparents.
The best part about this event is that it is local to the city – with gas prices these days, it is great to have a fun event close by to spend some time at. Join us Saturday, July 19 from 1-4 p.m. or Sunday from 9 a.m. to about Noon. There will be a Cowboy Church Prayer Service at 8:30 am Sunday morning on the grounds hosted by the Sorensen’s of Yankton, SD. Loretta Sorensen is the publisher of “Spirit” – a Christian testimony magazine, and her husband, Alan, has spent his lifetime training horse teams and uses his Horsemanship experience to relate Christ’s word.
We’ll see you Saturday 1-4 p.m. or Sunday at 8:30 for Cowboy Church, or 9 a.m. for event!
